Meditation is a timeless practice that bridges the gap between your inner and outer worlds.  It can be a true beacon of light during times of recovery. It’s not just about sitting in stillness; it’s about creating a sacred space within where you can find solace and strength.

The Healing Alchemy of Meditation

The benefits gained from meditation are numerous as it allows our nervous system to regulate and calm as we return to our natural innate power. One great benefit of meditation  is that it provides a calm amidst  the chaos.  It allows you to anchor yourself in the present moment, gently reminding you that the turbulence of the past does not define your present or future.  It also allows you to still your body and yourself and realize that whatever storm you may currently be managing, it too shall pass.  It helps you to remember to respond and not to react to whatever challenges you are facing. 

Other benefits of meditation include emotional cleansing, cultivating self compassion, and reclaiming your inner power. Meditation is like a gentle broom that sweeps away the emotional debris left by toxic experiences. It allows suppressed emotions to surface, be acknowledged, and gradually released.  Through meditation, you learn to hold space for your feelings with kindness, allowing self-compassion to bloom. This self-compassion becomes a soothing balm for the wounds inflicted by toxic relationships.  Meditation also empowers you to regain control over your thoughts and reactions. You become the observer, untangling yourself from the narratives that toxic relationships may have woven.  

How to Begin: Guided Meditation

Consider starting with guided meditations designed to heal and restore. These guided journeys gently lead you through self-discovery, forgiveness, and nurturing self-love, fostering the soil for transformation to take root.  Search for these meditations on YouTube or download one of the apps that will guide you step by step on how to cultivate a great meditative practice such as Headspace, Calm, or Insight Timer. 

As you embark on this journey of meditation, remember that it’s not about instant results but rather about the cumulative impact of regular practice. With each session, you’re nurturing a space where healing can unfold at its own pace.

Other keys to beginning a consistent meditation practice is time and space. I recommend you start off with a special space to meditate in and to commit to a specific time of day.  A spare room in your house, a corner of your bedroom, a special chair, or even a spot in your backyard is a great place to mark for your meditation practice to begin. The key is to find a space where you won’t be interrupted by noise or distractions.  Setting a regular schedule helps you make meditation a habit, rather than something you do sporadically when you have extra time. Over time, your brain will start to associate your meditation practice with your regular schedule, making it easier to stick to your routine.

When you’re first starting out with meditation, it’s important to start small and build up gradually. Start with just a few minutes of meditation each day, and gradually increase the length of your sessions as you become more comfortable.  Consistency is key when it comes to meditation, and it’s much easier to be consistent when you’re starting with a small time commitment.
